Do you sometimes watch Gardeners’ World, or some other similar TV programme and think to yourself, “it’s alright for Monty Don because he’s got a hidden army of under-gardeners all with a lifetime’s experience and knowledge, but what I need is some help and advice from someone local who can show me what will grow in East Yorkshire soil and what I need to do to get the most out of my small patch of garden”?
Well help is at hand. Through Cottingham Open Gardens you are able to visit many gardens in your area that are managed by people just like you. They’ve often experienced all the problems that you face but have persevered and found ways of overcoming the difficulties. They’ll be able to tell you what grows well and, just as importantly, what they’ve found difficult to grow.
You may see plants which would be perfect for your garden but which you have not thought of growing, or which you’ve tried and failed. Undoubtedly you will go away with some new ideas regarding how to best organise and manage your garden.
All those who open their gardens to the public are willing to share their knowledge and may help you to overcome the problems which you face. Many also have young plants for sale taken from seeds or cuttings of plants growing in their garden. So you don’t need to be enticed by an enhanced picture in a catalogue from a company based miles away, you can see the actual plant growing in the Cottingham garden, so you can know what to expect.
Cottingham Open Gardens 2018 will take place on Sunday 17th June and Sunday 24thJune.
Entry passports (£4 per adult, accompanied children free) will be on sale at Barker’s Newsagents in Hallgate, from 1st June
